Remember when you were a kid and you got excited for Valentine’s Day? Your mom would buy a package of pun based cards to give out at school and you’d come home with 30 similar ones from each kid in class who's mom made them do the same thing?
There’s something so nostalgic, innocent and kitschy about those times that it’s inspired me to start collecting cute vintage Valentine's Day cards a couple years back. You know, the nauseatingly adorable ones with baby kittens and ducks and lambs - send them my way! Maybe it's the kid in me but I still love anything that gives me the warm fuzzies like that, especially this time of year.
The best part about collecting these vintage cards is seeing how things have changed over the decades and how the language and attitudes back then aren't always reflective of modern day times (thankfully). Sure throw a gaga-eyed kitten on a card and it'll still resonate with the under-13 crowd, but the cutesy captions that went with them can now read as wildly inappropriate and irrelevant........ therefore rendering them equal parts painful and hilarious!
I've come across my share of cringe-worthy, old-timey V-Day cards which I couldn't bring myself to share here (rampant racism anyone?). But there are others that are so comically wrong and inappropriate that I just had to share. Check out 12 of my favorites below for a good laugh and see if you'd be brave (or insensitive) enough to give these to your crush today.
Excuse me? He did not just say that.
That's like, not even funny.
Domestic violence is nothing to joke about.
Hey, men can be victims too.
Ummm.... what?
Sorry - you're talking about the cannon, right?
Oh, no. No, no, no, no, no...
I don't even know what to say.
Wtf??
This triggers my PTSD though.
How is this considered funny, Hallmark?
Sorry but no.
Which made you cringe the most? Do you think today's sentiments will be considered inappropriate 50 years from now?

Yikes! I can’t believe these were once considered to be acceptable. What were we thinking???
